This is my first post/blog so bear with me. I am a grammar geek, but am by no means perfect. Feel free to critique but don't get upset if I ignore any rude comments. I'm like a duck that way. I am comfortable in my own skin and secure in most choices I make. I know that I am only on this journey and earth for a short time and God is in charge. No matter how hard I try to fight Him sometimes, he always wins ;-) and that is a good thing. His choices are always what I need, even when they are not what I want.
At my age, I am able to let a lot of it go, relax and be patient most of the time, but still get excited about new things, even when they are just new to my kids and not me. I love my friends and family, even when they make me crazy. I have only been homeschooling a few years, but LOVE it. I wish I had started earlier, but I guess that was not in God's plan for me. My kids are tween/teen boys and are really great kids. They have taken to homeschooling well.
Homeschooling - When you look at this word, you would most likely think that this means you sit at your kitchen table with a bunch of textbooks for 6-8 hours daily Monday through Friday. You would be SO wrong.
Our homeschooling style / life is like some, and very unlike others. That is the beauty of homeschooling. It is your home, your school, and they are your children. You are in charge. There isn't a "controlling" principal, state or organization unless you let it intervene.
The day can begin at 4 or 5 a.m. if you have animals to care for (or early rising children), or it could begin as late as 2 p.m. if you are a family of nightowls. We switch between the two depending on our plans. If we have a roller coaster trip planned, sleep takes a backseat to wild rides, long drives and food, fun and friends.
Yes, homeschoolers have friends! Imagine that. They are of all ages, backgrounds, races, etc. Our children are VERY socialized (not subject to stereotypes and standardization). They are free to meet people everywhere we go and interact with them as human beings. We see the good, the bad and sometimes the ugly, but we have the opportunity to discuss it as a family and decide what is right for us and our feelings about what we see.
If we are having a less eventful week, it is still filled with music classes, math, science, language arts, history, geography and whatever else we happen to want to study. Our "school" is open 24/7/365. It is always time for learning. That is not to say that I force my children to do school work 24/7/365. It is AVAILABLE. It's just like vegetables, fruits and nuts. Make them available, get rid of the junk and kids will make good choices most of the time. Parents need to guide them and set a good example.
Well, I've told you a little about myself so next time I will tell you about my kids.
